So many bloggers want to start a blog with WordPress, but the idea of it seems too daunting or technical to them. If you really want to start your blog and you want to get it up and running quickly, I’ve written this easy setup guide to help you. You can register your domain, setup your hosting, and install WordPress yourself, in 10 simple steps, for as little as $12.96. Ready to get started? Let’s go!
Step 1: Go to Hostgator.com to start
Click on the big yellow “Get Started Now” button to view their hosting packages.
Step 2: Choose a hosting plan and billing cycle
On the next page, scroll down to choose a plan and billing cycle. I recommend the Hatchling Plan. To get on the monthly billing cycle, click the “Starting at” dropdown box and choose the monthly option at the bottom. Then, click “Sign up now.”
Step 3: Enter your domain name
If you do not have a domain name for your blog, you will need to register one. You can do that through Hostgator so you have everything in one place. Enter the domain name into the box. If it is not available, you will need to choose another domain name or domain extension, instead.
If you already have a domain, select the “I already own this domain” option and enter your domain in the box.
Step 4: Enter your account information
Enter your desired username and security pin. In the middle of the page, enter your billing information.
Step 5: Choose your add-ons
Under “Hosting Addons,” choose the add-ons you’d like, if any. I recommend Domain Privacy Protection, to keep your domain registration private and safe from spammers. If you are using a domain you already own, then this will not be an option for you (you must purchase domain privacy at your domain registrar). Make sure you uncheck any add-ons that you don’t want.
Step 6: Enter your coupon code
Under “Have a coupon code?” use the code BLOGMANUAL to get 25% off your first billing cycle for hosting. Or, for a limited time, use the code 1PENNY to get your first month of hosting for only 1 cent.
Step 7: Review your order and create your account
Check the box at the bottom if you agree to the terms, and then click “Create Account.” After you do that, you’ll receive an email with your login information.
Step 8: Log in to your cPanel
Click your cPanel login URL and enter your login information (both in the email I mentioned above) to access your website’s control panel.
Step 9: Install WordPress
Once you login, you should see the screen below (just close any popup windows). Click “Get Started With WordPress Today” to install WordPress.
On the next page, click the “continue” button to get started installing WordPress.
Then, enter your information. You really only need to enter your admin email (email address), blog title, and admin user (username).
When you’re ready, click “Install Now!” The installation will take a few seconds to complete.
Step 10: Log in to WordPress
To make sure everything was set up correctly, log in to your WordPress account. You can click the “Admin Area” URL that was provided to you at the end of installation. Use the username and password you set above to log in.
And that’s it! You’ve just set up your WordPress blog in 10 easy steps.
