Today I’m sharing a Hostgator review, featuring my own personal experience with their services. I hope this will help you make a decision on whether or not you should choose them as your host.
I’ve been hosted with Hostgator for 6 years. I previously had all of my projects hosted with them, but now I have only a few (I’ve moved most of my projects to Big Scoots). I originally chose them because they had good pricing and hosting plans that fit my needs — and I liked that they are a Texas-based company (which is where I live). I currently have a reseller account, and in the past I’ve had a shared account.
Over the years, I’ve been mostly satisfied with Hostgator’s services. Although they definitely have their flaws, I can only think of one major issue I’ve had with my account.
Features – 8/10
They have all of the basic features that most web hosts provide — 24/7 support, cPanel (back-end control panel), webmail/custom email, 1-click script installs, 99% uptime guarantee, and a money-back guarantee. They also offer paid upgrades, like automatic backups and SiteLock security. However, they are missing some small features that are included with other hosts. It’s not a dealbreaker, but some things just make life easier (like Softaculus).
Even when I was a complete newbie and had no clue what I was doing, I could easily manage my own account and any scripts I was using. Over the years, I’ve only had 1 security issue that was quickly resolved after I contacted customer support.
Moving from another host to Hostgator? They will move your website or blog (and domain, if you want) for you for FREE. I think that’s pretty awesome, since many hosts charge for transfers. I’ve used this service myself and it saved me the headache and nightmare of having to move it myself since I didn’t have as much technical knowledge at the time.
Customer Service – 7/10
Their customer service doesn’t have the greatest response time. I’ll submit a ticket and it’ll usually take 6-8 hours to hear back from them. Although that’s not the fastest response time (compared to Big Scoots for example — their response time is usually less than an 30 minutes), I hardly ever have an issue that I need to submit a support ticket for. When I do, they always do whatever they can to help me with my issue.
I really like their live chat feature. I like to use it when I just have a quick question about something.
Uptime & Speed – 7/10
Hostgator’s speed and uptime are great for smaller websites and plans, but as someone who has multiple accounts and script installs, I don’t feel like it’s powerful enough for me — it’s not as fast as I’d like (and my sites don’t generate a ton of traffic or use too many resources) and I do have random moments where my site times out.
Price – 9/10
Hostgator has excellent pricing. You can get their smallest plan with unlimited disk space and bandwidth for as low as $3.96 a month (for 3 years, with coupon code BLOGMANUAL) or you can get it for $6.71 (first month, also with coupon code BLOGMANUAL). They also have other billing cycles, like 3 months, 6 months, and yearly, where you save money with the more months you buy. You can cancel anytime and they have a 45 day money-back guarantee for if you’re not satisfied with your service.
Their checkout process is really great, as well. They don’t pressure you to upsell with their services (unlike some other hosts, like GoDaddy).
Overall rating: 7/10
Overall, I give Hostgator a 7/10. Although they are not the best, I have had almost no issues with them over the course of 6 years, and I think that’s pretty good! I think they are perfect for shared hosting plans and smaller blogs that don’t use a lot of bandwidth or other resources.
